Rick Ross has beat a multimillion dollar lawsuit filed by "Freeway" Ricky Ross against himself, Jay-Z, Def Jam and Universal Music Group over the name "Rick Ross" on Monday November 1st.
Freeway Ricky's lawsuit was filed in the United States District for Southern California and claimed Rick Ross, born William Leonard Roberts II, infringed on Freeway Ricky's intellectual property rights by using the name "Rick Ross" to market his music.
The lawsuit claimed Rick Ross' image was based largely on his real life image as a former cocaine boss that moved thousands of kilos of crack cocaine in Los Angeles during the mid 1980's and early 1990's, before being caught up in the infamous Iran-Contra Scandal.
The judge smacked down the case because a life of crime cannot establish "secondary meaning." This means you can't establish a trademark off being a criminal.
Seems like common sense. What doe-doe lawyer took this case?
